Trailblazing contributions – ABOVE AND BEYOND

Hot Fractured Rock (HFR) geothermal power at such significant rock depths, was pioneering technology. Accordingly, there was significant variability and unknowns in many aspects of its development.

Recognising the challenges of the technology in a start-up organisation pushing scientific boundaries, the client needed things delivered in a quick-sand environment through initiative and collaboration, our team produced scorching results. Demonstrated by Geodynamics firing up a 6-week engagement into more than a years’ involvement.

Engagement: Geodynamics

Geodynamics entered a joint venture with Origin Energy to produce geothermal energy using Hot Fractured Rock (HFR) technology in the Cooper Basin in outback Australia.

This highly experimental project, included drilling of hundreds of wells many kilometres into the solid rock below, civil and building infrastructure and the creation of power plants whose turbines were to be turned by the steam heated from the rocks many kilometres below.

The project was designed in three stages:

  • Stage 1 – Proof of concept
  • Stage 2 – Establishment of a 50MW pilot plant
  • Stage 3 – Progressive roll-out of plant and transmission lines, supporting 50MW of commercial production

Engagement

Geodynamics, the developer, sought assistance to develop a Project Management Framework and associated documentation to progress the Program. In addition, a master programme for the entire 500MW development was necessary to confirm the scope and budget.

These assets were needed to achieve a Final Investment Decision (FID) and Final Close of Stage 2 as early as possible, to demonstrate the feasibility of the technology and to provide investor confidence for the full commercialisation.

What was delivered

A robust and Prince2 aligned, Geodynamics tailored, project management framework for the entire company, including supporting policies and forms, recognising the level of maturity of the client.

A master programme facilitating the early identification of the critical path, milestones, risks and opportunities for the full commercialisation.
